What a week for the UE coaching staff.
Fishers High School point guard Jaylon Brown, a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, tweeted Monday night that he’s verbally committed to the Aces.
“I am now officially Committed to THE University of Evansville!
#purpleaces” the tweet read.
It marked the second reported committment of the day, following hours after Cleveland point guard Duane Gibson pledged.
Two point guards aren’t a problem. The Aces are set to graduate both Ned Cox and Troy Taylor after this season and also lose Colt Ryan and Lewis Jones.
“Coach (Marty) Simmons thinks I’ll be able to play right away,” Brown told the Indianapolis Star. “They are losing four good guards so if I can come and earn it, I think he believes I can help my freshman year.”
Both Brown and Gibson plan to sign during the NCAA’s Early Period, which starts on Nov. 14. They add to what’s now a three-player 2013 recruiting class along with coach Marty Simmons’ son, Castle High School forward Blake Simmons.
Brown announced a top five schools of UE, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, St. Bonaventure and Wichita State in August. Drake and Richmond also expressed interest.
He visited UE two weeks ago and this past weekend traveled to Miami (Ohio) on an official visit, which lasted through Sunday.
The Aces’ staff has “been on him since last year, and they’ve done a good job of building a relationship with him,” Fishers coach Leonard said earlier this month. “He’s pretty much a relationship kid.”
