Quotable from UE’s 58-49 loss to Notre Dame

UE coach Marty Simmons on Notre Dame’s Jack Cooley (19 points, 11 rebounds): “Our guys battled hard against him. Obviously, we fouled him too much. He’s a heck of a player. He’s got great hands. He’s really smart. He really knows how to play, gets angles in there and moves with the ball.”

Simmons on free throw disparity (UE attempted seven and Notre Dame 30): “We got to the line seven times and they got there 30. That was a strength of our team last year, was being aggressive and being able to attack and get to the free throw line. I just think we settled with too many jump shots.”

Simmons on not being able to hit a key shot: “We could never get over the hump. That’s partly us not executing enough to get over that hump, but give them credit because I felt like, in times, they were able to raise their intensity and prevent us from doing it.”

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey: “I’m pleased with our win because I think we beat a really good team. I think that’s a win that can be part of our resume…We had to work to win, and I love that the first game of the season.”

Brey on keeping UE at bay: “Every time they made it interesting, I thought we really executed, got a key stop or made a heck of a play. I think that will do us well over the course of five months.”

UE sophomore Ryan Sawvell on what he learned Saturday: “We’re not that far from beating a team like that, I think, and that’s definitely an NCAA tournament team. Anything’s possible this season, especially within our conference.”

UE senior Colt Ryan: “They’re a long team, so they can contest some shots. But there were some shots where we felt like we were wide open, and some of our better shooters on the team, we weren’t making them. That’s just how it goes sometimes, but you’ve got to be able to adapt if you want to beat a great team and win games against great opponents like Notre Dame.”

Notre Dame senior Scott Martin on playing a difficult opponent to open: “That’s a good thing for us. Like coach said, they’re better than a lot of Big East teams that we’re going to play this year. They’re a very, very good team. We’re happy to get out of it with a win.”
