UE News and Notes for Nov. 18, 2012

—First off, thanks to UE senior Andy Chinn for sharing the kind of story that’s not always easy to talk about. He and his family had a deep connection to the Aces’ participation in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, which I wrote about for Monday’s paper.

—As for what happened on the court the last three days, observations from the Aces’ three games in three days are posted along with links to stories from UE’s contests against Buffalo, Yale and Western Illinois. A lot happened in those three games, but a trend emerged: the Aces play stingy defense when they need to, and the offense isn’t helping things out right now.

—UE coach Marty Simmons is expected to announce the Aces’ 2013 recruiting class on Monday. All three players — Jaylon Brown, Blake Simmons and Duane Gibson — have signed their letters, faxed them in and celebrated the occasion. The NCAA’s early signing period runs through Wednesday of this week.

—The Missouri Valley Conference has had a heck of a start. MVC men’s basketball teams are a combined 24-5 early this season in non-conference play, with three of the five losses coming to ranked opponents. Six of the league’s 10 members still haven’t lost. Check out full league stats so far here. MVCFans.com also offers some early power rankings that don’t shake out so favorable for UE.

The UE women set a record in their game Saturday against San Jose State for 3-pointers in a game with 15. Hometown product Khristian Hart, a Harrison High School graduate, had five of those.

—UE’s volleyball team closed its season Saturday night with a 3-1 road loss to Illinois State. The Aces went 9-22 this season and 4-14 in conference — not enough to qualify for this week’s MVC tournament.
