Simmons talks Colorado State, future opponents on radio

Marty Simmons

After a two-week hiatus, UE coach Marty Simmons’ radio show resumed Monday night from the Turoni’s location by campus. Here’s a sampling of what Simmons had to say ahead of games against Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday and Murray State on Saturday at the Ford Center:

Simmons on Monday’s practice: “Hopefully tonight’s indicative of how we’re going to practice tomorrow night and play on Wednesday. We had very good effort — very good energy. There’s a little bit different preparation as we head into this game. We’re going to be playing against one of the most athletic, most aggressive basketball teams we’ve played to this point. Miami of Ohio likes to press on made field goals…One of the areas I thought probably cost us the game at Colorado State was aggressiveness. We need to attack. I think too many times we try to shoot our way through things rather than being aggressive off the dribble.”

On freshman Egidijus Mockevicius handling Colorado State big man Colton Iverson: “Where we get caught with him is, at times — and Miami has a guy like this too — is when they play fours at the five, and there’s a quickness advantage where they can isolate him, take him off the dribble and do some other things from that. He did a terrific job on Iverson. I made a mistake — we practiced three days on doubling the post, and the first two times we doubled the post we gave up a layup and a foul…Really, in the second half we played him straight up, played some zone — which I thought helped — and Egidijus did a terrific job of being able to guard one of the better post players in the country.”

On sophomore Jaylon Moore’s play this season: “He’s explosive. He’d really given us three solid games in a row. He wasn’t as good at Colorado State. Our inside guys were a little timid — a little soft — again, we weren’t agressive enough. For you fans out there, you people that have some mean pills for when the game starts to when it finishes — Jaylon Moore is such a nice, polite, just great guy. We need him to be more agressive, because he can be outstanding. It’s not his personality, but we certainly need that to be his personality on the floor.”

Simmons talking about senior Colt Ryan’s passing ability: “That’s one of the things that we probably missed more than anything from Colt Ryan when he was out. People see his scoring and so on and so forth, but he’s one of our best — if not the best — passers on the team, and the defense has to stretch with him, which creates more space between the cutter and the guy delivering the basketball.”

On what to expect from Miami (Ohio) under new coach John Cooper: “He was the head coach at Tennessee State last year, and that was, I believe, Murray State’s lone loss heading to the NCAA tournament and they had them on the ropes for an upset during the conference tournament. So he’s an outstanding coach…We talked about today, we’ll talk about it tomorrow and all day Wednesday is, we want to be ultra, ultra agressive against the press. We want to break it and stay agressive. If it’s not there, we’ll go right into our halfcourt offense.”

Simmons hasn’t seen Murray State play yet. “I know they’ve got (Isaiah) Canaan, who’s a first-team preseason all-American. We played them two years ago down at Murray State, had a pretty good team, and they put it on us pretty good. They play extremely hard. They’re quick. They’re athletic. They’re strong. They can shoot the basketball. They can rebound the basketball. They’ll be one of the more difficult teams that we’ll play all year.”

On the future of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge: “I think what we’re doing right now is taking a year off. I think it’s still up for discussion. I’m mixed on it. It’s good competition, but you (radio play-by-play man Lance Wilkerson) traveled with us. We had to bus down to Nashville on Thursday night, catch an early-morning flight Friday, and then we got back (Sunday) at around 3:30, 4 o’clock. It’s just a lot of travel time with that, but you’re playing outstanding competition.”

Remembering college basketball coach Rick Majerus, who died over the weekend: “It’s kind of neat to hear all these people who have great knowledge and respect in the game of basketball talk about him and what a mentor and creative guy he was. He was one of the absolute best basketball minds in the game. He could be sitting here with our fans right now, eating pizza, and he’d have those napkins out, drawing plays and saying ‘How are you going to attack the 2-3 zone?’ He just loved the game of basketball.”
