UE News and Notes for Dec. 16, 2012

—As a follow up to Saturday’s Alabama State game, I wrote for Monday’s paper about sophomore Ryan Sawvell. The forward had averaged just six minutes and a point a game over the last two weeks before posting a season-high 11 against the Hornets. Even more, coach Marty Simmons nearly started Sawvell.

—Anything else from Alabama State — links, quotes and a few thoughts from the Aces’ sixth win in eight tries — can be found here.

—Next up for UE is Tuesday’s game against Division II Oakland City University at the Ford Center. Long-time coach Mike Sandifar took some time out of his Sunday to discuss the Aces and what a matchup against UE means to his largely local roster.

—Sunday was quiet as far as realignment and the Missouri Valley Conference. UE officials are adamant the Aces are going nowhere — despite a report Saturday that the school is looking at the Horizon League — and I tend to believe them. Creighton, however, seems an invite away from joining the Big East Conference’s football-only schools. MVC presidents will conference to discuss the matter soon.

—Courier & Press reporter John Martin took a look at the complex process that is transforming the Ford Center’s surface, which arena workers had to do a number of times last weekend for Evansville IceMen hockey, then UE men’s basketball, and more hockey before an Aces women’s game.

—Wichita State’s leading scorer and rebounder, center Carl Hall, hurt his hand in a practice Saturday and will be examined further Monday by a doctor. The 23rd-ranked Shockers host Charleston Southern on Thursday. Hall averages 13.9 points and 7.6 rebounds.

—Omaha World-Herald reporter Dirk Chatelain wrote one of the stories of the year for Sunday’s paper about Josh Jones, the Creighton guard whose future with the hometown team is up in the air following another heart problem.

—Big man Jackie Carmichael scored a career-high 30 points Sunday as Illinois State knocked off Morgan State 87-68 in the only MVC men’s game of the day. The Redbirds are 7-3 on the season and 5-1 at home. UE travels to Normal, Ill., on Jan. 26.

—UE’s swimming and diving teams split Saturday’s home meet against Eastern Illinois. The women’s team beat the Panthers 196-184 while the men’s team fell 198-170.
