UE News and Notes for Jan. 30, 2013

—UE senior Colt Ryan went 6 of 15 from the field against Illinois State and 8 of 17 versus Northern Iowa. That’s about as good as it gets for opposing defenses, which Ryan said are playing him more physically this time around in Missouri Valley Conference play.

—The UE women, having won four of five games with sophomore Kat Taylor starting at point guard, travel to Bradley on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip against the Braves. There, the Aces will be looking to cut down on their MVC-leading turnover rate and get back to winning after Sunday’s defeat to first-place Wichita State.

—Creighton beat Missouri State 91-77 on Wednesday in Omaha while moving into a first-place Missouri Valley Conference tie with Wichita State at 8-2. The Bears, who have now lost five of six, are 6-16 overall and 4-6 in MVC play entering Saturday’s 2 p.m. game against UE in Springfield, Mo.

—Egidijus Mockevicius had one of his best games to date, UE didn’t seem bothered by Jordan Jahr’s suspension, and the Aces won again at home on Tuesday, 54-51 against Northern Iowa in overtime. Find everything from that victory here, and some postgame quotes here.

—Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson says the MVC has three at-large bids coming if Creighton, Wichita State and Indiana State keep up their pace. Jacobson would know having coached the Panthers to the 2010 Sweet 16.

—The MVC’s preseason baseball poll, assembled by the league’s eight coaches and released Wednesday, tabbed Missouri State the conference favorite and slotted UE last. The Aces also didn’t place a player on the preseason all-conference team. UE’s season starts Feb. 15-17 with a road series against Arkansas-Little Rock of the Sun Belt Conference.

—A future MVC baseball member, Dallas Baptist, is putting the finishing touches on its new Horner Ballpark. The Patriots are part of the MVC as of July 1 and play their first season in the conference in 2014.

—Kristine Arnold from UE’s sports information office previewed the Aces’ softball team this week. Under fourth-year coach Mark Redburn, UE was tabbed ninth of 10 teams in the MVC’s preseason poll. The Aces open their season Feb. 15 at the Troy Invitational in Alabama.
