The demise of ESPN’s BracketBusters and reasons for it have been well documented, but the event does have one more season left in its current form.
BracketBusters pairings for games Feb. 22-23 will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Monday during a half-hour show aired on ESPN U.
UE, which last year hosted Western Illinois, will play this season on the road. Part of the BracketBusters agreement requires host teams play a return game against their opponent in November or December of next season.
The final BracketBusters field features 122 teams from 13 leagues, including all 10 Missouri Valley Conference members. Creighton and Wichita State, both ranked this week, headline the field.
Thirteen of the matchups will be determined by ESPN and broadcast across its family of networks. The other 58 are determined by a panel of conference commissioners.
At this point, an at-large bid to the NCAAs isn’t really feasible for UE (13-10, 6-5 MVC). But BracketBusters still provides the opportunity for TV exposure as well as a ratings percentage index boost — with a win, of course — for NIT at-large purposes.
Following a loss Saturday at Missouri State, the Aces’ Collegiate Basketball News RPI was 127th. They can expect an opponent similar RPI standing.
