UE News and Notes for March 4, 2013

ueathletics34—The Missouri Valley Conference will announce end-of-season all-conference teams and specialty awards at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Other than the first and second team all-conference, there’s a freshman, newcomer and all-bench team.

—The MVC’s 10 coaches will also be available for comment via media teleconference at 11 a.m. It will be streamed online, as all the weekly conferences are, at Valley Live. Indiana State coach Greg Lansing should update the status of second-leading scorer Manny Arop, who sat out suspended for last Saturday’s loss to UE.

—An expected all-MVC first team player for the second year in a row, UE senior Colt Ryan was named StatSheet.com’s Player of the Week. That’s not just for the MVC, but nationally. The computer-generated website factored in Ryan’s statistics as well as who they came against — Wichita State (ratings percentage index top 50) and Indiana State (RPI top 100).

—Per UE’s director of development and men’s basketball play-by-play radio announcer, Lance Wilkerson, there will be a UE fan pregame party on the mezzanine level of the Scottrade Center at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The fourth-seeded Aces play No. 5 Indiana State at 2:35 p.m.

—Jeff Borzello of CBS Sports predicts the Aces will win it all at Arch Madness. Borzello writes: “What we expect to happen: We saw Creighton and Wichita State lose several times in the final month of the season, so neither team will roll through the league. In Arch Madness, anything can happen — and here’s the pick to win it all: Colt Ryan and Evansville.”

—UE signee Jaylon Brown caused a stir last Thursday when he delivered a highlight-reel dunk for his Fishers High School team. Here’s a solid better video of the jam. Keep in mind Brown is a 5-foot-11 point guard.

UE’s baseball team split a doubleheader Monday to win its home-opening series against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Aces (3-7) bounced back from six straight losses — four of them to Southeastern Conference competition — to win two of three over the Panthers.

—Though UE’s golf team is last at the Samford Intercollegiate after a day of play, the Aces continue to get solid performances out of Harrison High School graduate Alex Turner, whose opening-round 74 paced them on day one.

—UE posted the women’s basketball program’s senior day video game shown after Sunday’s game. Check it out here. The Aces close their regular season with road games against Creighton on Thursday and Drake on Saturday.
