UE News and Notes for Aug. 29, 2012

Happy first day of college football! Though UE doesn’t have a football team, today’s still a great day for all college sports fans — especially in Indiana as IU hosts Indiana State tonight to kick off the season.

In other news…

–UE junior pitcher Kyle Freeland was tabbed a first-team Summer Collegiate All-American by Perfect Game. Freeland played for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the Cape Cod Baseball League and was one of four pitchers named to the first-team list. He was joined by Wichita State first baseman Casey Gillaspie as the only MVC honorees on the list.

–The men’s soccer team got a commitment today, as Scott County (Ky.) midfielder Cameron Cool announced his decision on Twitter:

Cool’s team is playing in the Cardinal Cup finals tonight after leading the team to a 2-1 victory in the semifinals. Scott County is currently 4-1 on the season.

–Tomorrow is MVC College Colors day, where fans are encouraged to tweet pictures of their team’s colors using the hashtag #MVCColors. A gallery from last year’s day can be found here.

–ICYMI: IU basketball’s non-conference schedule was released yesterday, with the Aces (as expected) slated for Tuesday, November 26. The game is a part of the Hoosiers’ Holiday 4-pack ticket promotion. You can find out more about it here.

–From around the MVC: Wichita State’s Chelsey Feekin was named one of 30 Senior CLASS Award nominees in volleyball in the announcement yesterday. The senior was an AVCA All-American last year in addition first-team all-Valley and all-Valley Scholar Athlete honors.
