UE News and Notes for Sept. 4, 2013

–The men’s basketball team released its Missouri Valley Conference schedule earlier this afternoon. You can check it out on the blog, and I’ll add some of my thoughts on the slate later today.

–The women’s basketball team also announced its full schedule earlier today. Headlining the slate for the Lady Aces is a trip to Saint Louis on Dec. 21, and UE will host Ball State Nov. 20. MVC play kicks off Jan. 2, as the Lady Aces host conference newcomer Loyola.

–UE has two MVC athletes of the week this week. Women’s soccer player Taylor Brand repeated as MVC Defender of the Week after the Aces posted its first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over UT Martin on Friday. UE’s cross country star Kelby Jenkins was named Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week after she won her second consecutive Mid-American Opener on Saturday.

–The MVC released a nice interactive graphic of all the players of the week:

–The volleyball team traveled to UT Martin last night for a midweek match, losing in five sets.  The Skyhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the Aces rallied back to take the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-22. But in the fifth set, UE couldn’t hold on to a 13-11 advantage and lost, 20-18.

–The women’s soccer team travels to Cincinnati tonight to play Xavier. The squad is on a two-game win streak, and will face a Musketeers team that won the Boilermaker Challenge Cup two weeks ago with wins over North Dakota, 3-0, and Purdue, 4-3.

–From around the MVC: Wichita State basketball player D.J. Bowles was taken to the hospital last night after collapsing during practice. Here’s a timeline of what’s happened:
