UE News and Notes for Sept. 10, 2013

–Final result from the weekend: women’s golf freshman Kayla Katterhenry finished the Redbird Invitational tied for third place. She finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 219 — just four strokes behind the winner — leading the Aces to an eighth-place finish. Sophomore Paige Crafton finished in 17th place after shooting 227.

–The volleyball team plays one more road match before hosting its tournament this weekend. The Aces will travel to Murray State to face the Racers, who are coming off a 3-0 weekend at the Spartan-Aggie Invitational. The two teams have met already this season, when UE beat Murray State in straight sets at the North Carolina Central Invitational two weeks ago.

–Taylor Brand is pretty darn good. For the third straight week, the junior defender was named MVC Defender of the Week after leading the Aces’ back line in three games last week. Evansville women’s soccer held its opponents to just two goals in those three games and, most recently, posted a shutout in Friday’s win over IUPUI.

–UE women’s soccer is sure bringing in the accolades this week. Sophomore goalkeeper Simone Busby was named MVC Goalkeeper of the Week after her stellar weekend. In a 1-0 loss to Xavier, Busby saved a penalty kick to keep the game scoreless. She recorded a total of 16 saves in UE’s three games and has allowed just four goals this season.

–Lauren Tiernan’s game-winner in overtime vs. IUPUI on Friday was recognized as a notable performance in the MVC women’s soccer weekly notebook.

–Here’s the MVC volleyball weekly notebook, with a roundup of results and stats for all Valley teams, and the players of the week. Ashley Ring’s dominant week was recognized as a notable performance, though Indiana State’s Morgan Dall took home Player of the Week honors.

–And here’s the MVC men’s soccer weekly notebook. Though sophomore forward Faik Hajderovic’s snipe from 30 yards out to give the Aces a 3-2 overtime victory on Friday wasn’t good enough to earn him Player of the Week, he still was recognized by the MVC for his notable performance.

–Speaking of men’s soccer, the first Division-I men’s soccer statistics for the season have been released. Junior goalkeeper Eric Teppen has recorded best single-game saves so far this season with 12, tied with Carlos Suarez of Saint Peter’s and Matt Pacifici of Davidson. Teppen’s 12-save effort came in a 2-1 2OT loss against New Hampshire on Sept. 1.
