UE News and Notes for Sept. 14, 2013

–It took 17 seconds for the women’s soccer team to score what turned out to be the game-winning goal in yesterday’s 3-0 victory over Belmont. Sophomore Abby Springer found the back of the net for the first score — her first of the season — and sophomore Kayla Smith added the other two scores. The Aces dominated the stat sheet, outscoring the Bruins 29-9.

–UE volleyball opened its home tournament with a convincing, 3-1 win over SIU Edwardsville on Friday. The Aces were led by Ashley Ring, who totaled a game-high 15 kills, and Emma Roberson tallied a season-high 13 kills.

–The women’s tennis team wrapped up day one of the SIUE Invitational with great results. Marketa Trousilova and Mina Milovic both went 2-0 in singles, leading the Aces to a clean sweep of Butler (5-0). At No. 1 singles, Natasha James went 1-1. UE will continue competition today.

–Still riding the momentum from its 2-1 2OT victory on Wednesday night, the men’s soccer team hosts Georgia State today at Arad McCutchan Stadium at 7pm. Freshman Jared Robinson leads the Aces with six points, and junior goalkeeper Eric Teppen is tied for second in the nation with 29 saves. Georgia State is looking for its first point of the season (0-4-0).

–The volleyball team continues its tournament today with two games against Memphis and Valparaiso. Memphis beat Valparaiso 3-0 on Friday. Check out what Ring, Meaghan Holmes and head coach Manolo Concepcion had to say in preparation for the tournament here.

–The men’s and women’s cross country teams continue their seasons at the Fleet Foot Invitational in Hunstville, Ala., today. Josh Genet will lead the men’s squad in the 8k race after placing 10th last weekend, and Kelby Jenkins headlines a women’s squad that will compete in the 5k race.
