UE News and Notes for Sept. 23, 2013

Lots of results from this weekend, so here we go:

–The men’s soccer team won the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic yesterday with a 5-4 win over Eastern Illinois. Sophomore Faik Hajderovic’s goal with 11 seconds left gave the Aces the victory.

UE beat New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday. Mark Anthony Gonzalez and Patrick Hodges scored to lift the Aces, 2-1, over the Highlanders.

–The volleyball team opened up Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend, losing to both Indiana State and Illinois State. The Aces lost 3-0 to the Sycamores on Saturday despite Ashley Ring’s match-high 14 kills. In Normal, Ill., on Friday, UE’s third-set rally fell short and the Aces dropped the first MVC match to Illinois State.

–The women’s soccer team won a couple of hard-fought this weekend, but improved their record to 7-2-1. Friday, the Aces beat Eastern Kentucky, 3-0, off goals from Kayla Smith, Abby Springer and Kady Dierenger. UE followed up the strong performance with a 2-1 overtime win over Bowling Green on Sunday. Smith tallied the game-winner just a minute into extra time.

–Today, the women’s golf team opens up a two-day tournament at SIUE. The Aces will be one of 10 teams in the 36-hole tournament.

–From around the MVC: Drake is the third Valley team to take down a ranked opponent this season as they beat New Mexico, 1-0, in Albuquerque on Friday.

–From around the MVC: Valley officials visited Arad McCutchan Stadium this weekend to take a look at the facilities, as UE will host the MVC women’s soccer tournament this season.
