UE News and Notes for Oct. 4, 2013

–This Saturday’s men’s soccer game against Drake is one of five “games to watch” according to TopDrawerSoccer.com. It’s the first MVC match for the Aces this season, as they’ll welcome the Bulldogs who are unbeaten in their last five games and haven’t allowed a goal in their last 380 minutes of play. UE is off to its best start since 1996 after knocking off No. 16 Butler on Tuesday.

–The women’s tennis team is off the MVC Individual Championships today in St. Louis this weekend. The bracket has already been set, where all five players will play singles while the Aces will field two doubles teams.

–The volleyball team is on another conference road trip this weekend. The Aces travel to Missouri State today for a Friday night match and will head to Wichita State on Saturday. Both squads are at the top of the conference, with the Shockers at the top at 3-0.

–The UE Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2013 was announced on Wednesday, with six student-athletes and one administrator included in the class. Charlie Fisher (football), Reed Jackson (men’s basketball), Jessica Jetton (women’s tennis), Jessica Kiefer (volleyball), Rebekah Legan (formerly Parker, women’s basketball), John MacCauley III (baseball), and John MacCauley Jr. (administrator) are the seven inductees.

–The men’s basketball schedule is very close to being complete. The Aces announced their first exhibition game opponent: Trevecca Nazarene, a Division II school. UE will play that exhibition game Oct. 26 at the Ford Center. Just one opponent is left TBA on the schedule, a Nov. 23 game against a team in the Ohio Classic.

–From around the MVC: The Valley is turning into the upset conference. MVC teams have upset five ranked teams this season after Bradley knocked off No. 3 Northewestern on Wednesday.

–CBS Sports experts have released their predictions for each college basketball conference this season. As for their MVC predictions, the experts are unanimous that Wichita State will win the conference, but are all over the board for the rest of the teams. Matt Norlander has UE finishing third — the highest among the panel — and the rest of the analysts have the Aces finishing anywhere between fifth and eighth. CBS is also releasing in-depth analysis each day for each conference, as well, so look for an MVC story in the next week.
