UE News and Notes for Oct. 10, 2012

I got my first look in the Fifth Third Practice Facility today before talking with Marty Simmons and Egidijus Mockevicius. It has that new gym smell.

—The UE men’s soccer team knocked off Missouri State in its conference opener Wednesday night behind two second-half goals from sophomore Nick Schroeder — one in the 51st minute and another in the 77th. Schroeder scored on both of his attempted shots, and goalkeeper Eric Teppen posted his third shutout win of the season. The Aces (7-4, 1-0 Missouri Valley Conference) next play at Bradley on Saturday.

—In case you missed it, the NCAA cleared UE big man Egidijus Mockevicius and granted the Lithuanian big man four years of eligibility. Mockevicius also talked to reporters today. Click here for a full transcript.

—The UE men will host their media day on Thursday before opening practice Friday. Any questions you want asked?

—Former UE forward Denver Holmes signed a contract this week with BBC Monthey out of Switzerland. It’s the second professional club he’s played for since ending his collegiate career last spring.

—Three UE opponents — Creighton, Murray State and Northern Iowa — made NBCSports.com’s top 15 mid-major teams in a list released Wednesday. Illinois State and Wichita were also listed among teams to keep an eye on.

The UE women canceled their pancake breakfast scheduled for Oct. 20 in the Fifth Third Practice Facility due to a scheduling conflict.

—Women’s coach Oties Epps tweeted a photo of the Aces’ 2012-2013 schedule poster.

—And in weird news of the day, Eric Crawford from WDRB in Louisville tweeted that the NCAA has banned Instagram used for recruiting purposes. Crawford added in a reply to another tweet: “The NCAA’s problem is with Instragram’s filters. No photo that’s been altered or staged for recruiting purposes can be sent.”
