—It’s finally game week, as the UE-USI men’s basketball exhibition is fewer than seven days away. Be looking for plenty of info on both teams this week leading up to the Vectren Community Classic game on Saturday.
—The UE men’s soccer team picked up its third win in four matches on Saturday, a 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas on senior Jesse Sharp’s 36th-minute goal. The Aces play at Indiana on Wednesday in their final non-conference match of the season. Matches at Drake on Saturday and against Creighton the following weekend end the regular season. At 3-1, UE is second in the conference standings behind Creighton, which is 3-0-1 in the league.
—The UE women also won 1-0 Saturday at Creighton in their regular-season finale and, at 4-1-1 in the MVC, guarantee their best league record since coach Krista McKendree’s first season in 2008. Drake controls its own destiny as far as a conference championship, but the Aces do retain a chance if the Bulldogs lose to Illinois State on Thursday. Also important, a second-place finish would guarantee a bye and berth into the MVC tournament semifinals. The Aces would most likely host a postseason match Sunday if they finish third.
—Look for more this week on both soccer teams and their chances at a conference championship. UE hasn’t claimed an MVC title in any sport since women’s basketball won its conference tournament in 2009 despite posting a sub-.500 record.
—With a 3-1 loss Saturday to Wichita State, the UE volleyball team’s hopes of making the MVC tournament took another shot. They’re not 3-8 in the league and need to pass Missouri State, which is 5-6, for sixth place in the MVC and a berth in the conference tournament. The Aces have seven matches left.
—The men’s and women’s golf teams start play Monday at the Dayton Invitational. It’s the fall finale for the men. The women host their Braun Intercollegiate at Quail Crossing Golf Club from Oct. 29-30 to finish their fall season.
