—The UE men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 16 Indiana in Bloomington on Wednesday night. The Aces surrendered both goals in the first half and continued a unique streak in the process. Their last 10 matches, both wins and losses, have ended in shutouts.
—Speaking of soccer, the Indiana loss doesn’t affect the Aces’ chances at a Missouri Valley Conference Championship. In today’s paper I listed the scenarios for both the men and the women, who are a Drake loss away from winning the school’s first MVC title since women’s basketball in 2009.
—The MVC will host a Google hangout from 1:45-2:45 p.m. Thursday with UE senior Colt Ryan. The hangout presents an opportunity to chat and ask questions with the Aces’ top scorer.
—CBS Sports ranks Ryan No. 36 on its list of top wing players entering this season, saying: “Ryan is one of the most productive all-around guards in the country, but he doesn’t get the proper respect playing for the Aces. Put up over 20 points per game, and continues to add more wrinkles to his game. Excellent shooter from all three levels.”
—Sports Illustrated writer Andy Glockner rates the MVC the nation’s 10th-best conference, notably behind the Atlantic 10, Mountain West and West Coast conferences.
—This is “inside journalism” type stuff, but on a slow day I published some quotes from Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson about a lack of media day this year for MVC men’s basketball. Thoughts? Doesn’t bother me, but at least one other MVC beat writer suggested this hurts the fans more than anyone.
—Preseason MVC polls will be released Monday when, in place of a media day, the league hosts a teleconference. Terre Haute Tribune-Star writer Todd Golden tweeted today that he has the Aces third, the highest I’ve seen them outside of my own poll.
—Murray State announced Wednesday that it’s suspended sophomore guard Zay Jackson for the entire season. Surveillance video was released recently of Jackson running into two people in a Wal-Mart parking lot, and he pleaded guilty to wanton endangerment. The Aces host the Racers on Dec. 8.
