Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson, speaking Tuesday at the Salukis’ media day, said his athletic director was the only one of 10 Missouri Valley Conference representatives who voted to continue the league’s tradition of an in-person preseason media day.
The MVC will unveil its preseason polls, all-conference team and player of the year Monday and conduct a teleconference with each coach, the first time the event has been held over the phone.
“The price of convenience is often detrimental for the good of the cause” Hinson said. “I believe that in concern with what happened here along with Missouri Valley media day.”
Hinson, the former Missouri State coach, inherits a Southern Illinois program coming off its worst record in school history. Still, he wants a chance to showcase the MVC at a formal media day, an event usually staged in St. Louis.
“You’ve got my view,” Hinson said. “We’ll see how much power we have if we have media day next year or not. I don’t mind the traveling. I don’t care if you have it in Anchorage, Alaska. I’ll be there.”
The decision not to have an in-person media day drew mixed reviews from MVC beat writers. Paul Suellentrop, sports reporter at The Wichita Eagle, wrote, “The problem is that fans are the losers.”
This being my first year covering the MVC, I don’t have much of an opinion. But with news holes shrinking in most papers, I’m not sure reporters need more than what’s offered by a teleconference to file the usual preseason MVC story. Plus, a teleconference style invites national reporters to simply call in and file reports, so the new configuration could actually raise the league’s profile.
Monday’s teleconference starts at 10:50 a.m. with the preseason player of the year (it will be Doug McDermott). Coach Marty Simmons is scheduled to speak at 12:20 p.m. I’ll be updating with comments from each coach.
