Blake Simmons always spent time around his father’s UE men’s basketball program, but Marty Simmons seemingly made it a point never to directly recruit his son. —UE signee Blake Simmons, out of Castle High School, scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds Wednesday in 16 minutes played for the Indiana Senior All-Stars as part of a 133-111 win over the Juniors before 2,125 fans at Tipton High School. Lloyd signs deal with Padres

Former UE pitcher Kyle Lloyd confirmed via text message he’s signed with the San Diego Padres organization after it selected him in the 29th round of last weekend’s MLB First-Year Player Draft. —It appears Chad Harmon, a former Illinois-Springfield assistant coach, will re-join UE’s men’s basketball staff this season in some capacity. Nine of UE’s 14 athletic programs posted their highest academic progress rates ever in figures released by the NCAA on Tuesday.
