Dakota Weatherford, a senior guard at Hamilton Heights (Ind.) High School, verbally committed to the UE women’s basketball team on Sunday after visiting town for the Aces’ win over Southern Illinois at the Ford Center.
“When I went (to Evansville), they gave off a great atmosphere and everyone was warm and welcoming,” Weatherford said.
The 5-foot-6 Weatherford averages 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists a game for Hamilton Heights, which is 13-1 this season and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
Last summer, Weatherford played on the 11-member Indiana Junior All-Stars team. She said Toledo, Miami (Ohio) and a few schools from Florida also recruited her.
UE coaches can’t comment on players until they sign a letter of intent, which Weatherford said she will do during the NCAA’s regular signing period that starts April 17.
Weatherford joins a 2013 recruiting class that already contains four signees, each of which made their pledges official in November. Those players are Brown County (Ind.) forward Sasha Robinson, Pendleton Heights (Ind.) High School forward Kenzie Gustin, Riverton Parke (Ind.) High School guard Sara Dickey and Holmen (Wis.) High School forward Caitlyn Russell.
