UE senior Colt Ryan’s had a lot of big nights lately. The one that put him over the 2,000-point mark for his college career restarted talk about whether Ryan can leave UE as its all-time leading scorer.
A season-high 33 points in Sunday’s overtime win against Drake puts Ryan at 2,027, behind just Larry Humes’ 2,236 and Marcus Wilson’s 2,053.
(It’s important to note that Wilson, who played for the Aces from from 1995-1999, is currently the top-scoring Division I player. Humes set his mark in three seasons at the Division II level, also pre 3-point shot.)
A hip pointer injury suffered in UE’s second game of the season set Ryan back in the chase to No. 1. Had he come back to average 20.5 points per game this year, as he did in 2011-2012, the record would be his. The 6-foot-5 forward averages 18.8 points per game on the season, but during a healthy Missouri Valley Conference slate he’s tallying 22.8 a contest.
Ryan was last season’s MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, a preseason all-MVC selection and named to the Senior CLASS Award watch list. So when’s Batesville, Ind., native going to really reflect on all he’s done at UE?
“After it’s all said and done,” he said Sunday. “I just want to keep doing better for this team and keep doing better for this program. These fans are so great out here, and they deserve to have a special season this year. And my teammates deserve to have a special season. The senior class – Ned, Troy, Lewis – we’ve been through a lot.”
UE fan Bryan Hartman made Ryan’s scoring quest into an exercise Monday for his 7th- and 8th-grade students. Hartman kindly shared this table, which lists what Ryan has to average to set a new all-time scoring record at UE contingent on how many more games the Aces play (NCAA tournament or otherwise).
