Castle High School senior forward Blake Simmons will sign a letter of intent to UE at the Knights’ ceremony Nov. 15, according to a news release issued Thursday by the school.
Simmons, son of coach Marty Simmons, earned co-Southern Indiana Athletic Conference player of the year honors last season and verbally committed to the Aces in May.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward (per Rivals.com) averaged 19.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists as a junior on Castle’s team that went 20-5 and earned a Class 4A semistate berth. Simmons also made 41 percent of his 3-point attempts.
Additionally, Simmons carries a 4.0 grade-point average and belongs to the National Honor Society.
Simmons’ commitment was the first for UE’s 2013 class.
A pair of point guards — Fishers High School’s Jaylon Brown and Duane Gibson out of Cleveland — added to the class with commitments this month. Both Brown and Gibson also plan to sign during the NCAA’s early period, which runs from Nov. 14-21.
UE has four scholarships to allot over the next two classes (2013 and 2014) with seniors Colt Ryan, Ned Cox, Troy Taylor and Lewis Jones set to exhaust their eligibility after this season.
