When UE sophomore Ryan Sawvell showed up to the Ford Center on Tuesday, he found a surprise: all-orange uniforms waiting for the Aces.
“I had no idea until when I walked into the locker room before the game,” said Sawvell, who scored a career-high 16 points in the brightly colored getup.
“I think one of the coaches kind of brought it up, and the players thought it was neat,” said coach Marty Simmons. “More than anything, it just kind of gets them familiar with it.”
Don’t expect the brightly colored jerseys to become a fixture, but Simmons found positives from bringing them out for the first time this season in a game against Division II Oakland City University.
The Aces won 103-69. Color certainly wasn’t a distraction.
UE wore its orange jerseys just once last season, in a double-overtime loss to Indiana State at the Ford Center.
“Maybe it was too big of an issue to do it (then),” Simmons said. “We just want our guys to feel comfortable wearing it earlier. I’m sure we’ll do it again later in the season.”
