—Conference realignment rumors are swirling within the Missouri Valley now that Creighton announced its exit more than two weeks ago. A pair of reports published Thursday indicated Illinois-Chicago is headed to the MVC, but multiple folks I’ve spoken to over the last 24 hours suggest any membership additions aren’t that far along yet. Give it a few weeks, they said, and there will possibly be something official to say.
—As Louisville prepares for a Final Four matchup this weekend with Wichita State, media covering the Cardinals started wondering how to beat the Shockers. So WDRB’s Rick Bozich asked UE coach Marty Simmons how managed to do something nobody else could this season and knock off Gregg Marshall’s squad twice.
—Belmont’s baseball team scored a run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings Wednesday in Nashville on its way to a 3-1 win over UE, which moved the Aces to 12-17 on the season. The Bruins (21-6) UE to one run — on Kyle Pollock’s sacrifice fly that followed a Chris Pearson double to lead off the fifth — but the Aces couldn’t plate another. They host Missouri Valley Conference foe Southern Illinois this weekend.
—UE’s softball team ended a seven-game road trip Wednesday with a 2-5 record after losing both games of a doubleheader at Tennessee-Martin. The Aces start a string of 11 straight home games Saturday when they host Northern Iowa.
—The UE women’s tennis team dropped its third straight match Wednesday — a 6-1 loss to Southern Illinois at Wesselman Park — but sophomore Marketa Trousilova continued a spectacular spring. The Czech Republic native moved to 9-1 in singles and 10-2 with doubles parter Natasha James. Afterward, she talked about her decision to transfer from Kansas State to UE.
—UE’s women’s soccer team, coming off a regular-season MVC title run, won its annual spring game with crosstown rival University of Southern Indiana by a 1-0 score on Wednesday. Rising senior Stephanie Thompson scored the match’s lone goal with 10 minutes to play on a header.
—Wichita State, BYU, Texas and DePaul make up the 2013 CBE Classic Field, announced Thursday and to take place this November in Kansas City. No word yet on where UE will play its MVC-required non-exempt tournament, which the Aces did last season through the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
—One MVC transfer I missed this week was that of Southern Illinois sophomore Dantiel Daniels, who struggled through a high ankle sprain last season to average 7.7 points and 3.2 rebounds. Daniels hasn’t picked his next school yet and said in a statement, “I feel the Saluki Basketball program has a bright future under Coach (Barry) Hinson’s leadership.”
