—Talk about a controversial call late in Sunday’s Wichita State-Illinois State game dominated Monday’s Missouri Valley coaches teleconference. Referees saddled the Redbirds with a late flagrant foul when big man Jackie Carmichael came down for a rebound and kicked the Shockers’ Tekele Cotton. With UE set to host the redbirds on Wednesday, Illinois State coach Dan Muller talked Monday about moving on from the incident.
—The kicker in all of that? Officials sent the wrong Wichita State player to the line after Carmichael kicked Cotton. The MVC released the following statement Monday afternoon:
“The Missouri Valley Conference has disciplined the basketball game officials for their administration of awarded free throws in the final moments of the Wichita State – Illinois State game on Sunday night at Redbird Arena in Normal, Illinois.
“Following a monitor review with :40 remaining, the officiating crew assessed a Flagrant 1 technical foul to Illinois State’s Jackie Carmichael. The incorrect student-athlete from Wichita State shot the ensuing free throws.
“As with all officiating and personnel matters, discipline is being handled internally.”
—Don’t be surprised to see freshman Adam Wing again crack the starting lineup Wednesday. He did so last weekend with senior Lewis Jones sick, but coach Marty Simmons liked what he saw: 10 points and seven boards from the Kentucky native.
—UE (14-13, 7-8 MVC) is 148th in the NCAA’s latest ratings percentage index, while Illinois State (16-11, 7-8 MVC) is 113th. Both teams are tied with Bradley for the conference’s fifth-best record.
—There’s a pretty easy way to get $5 tickets to the UE-Illinois State game: like either the university’s athletic Facebook page or follow @UEathletics on Twitter. Both will post vouchers for the discounted tickets before game time.
—Because Creighton is considered too far west for the “Catholic 7″ non-revenue sports to travel, it seems the MVC will go untouched in the latest round of conference realignment involving the Big East Conference’s private schools. Creighton’s move to join the Catholic 7 was once considered a “near definite” thing.
—UE’s baseball team dropped its season-opening series at Arkansas-Little Rock, losing Sunday’s game three by a 6-5 score. Each of the Aces’ games this weekend were one-run contests: a 2-1 win on Friday before Saturday’s 8-7 loss.
—UE’s softball team got off to a rocky start this weekend at the Troy Invitational in Alabama, going 0-5 in games against Virginia Tech (twice), Troy (twice) and North Florida.
—UE women’s swimmer Michelle Tipton and coach Rickey Perkins both earned MVC honors at last weekend’s conference meet, where the Aces finished fourth in the team standings.
—Butler earned a 4-3 win over UE’s women’s tennis team last Saturday. The Aces play at Murray State on Wednesday before returning home Friday to host SIU Edwardsville and Saturday for Tennessee Martin.
—UE posted its “Harlem Shake” video filmed at Saturday’s Creighton game today, combining some pre-game footage of Ace Purple with the student section at halftime. Take a look here.
