—Football gets all the attention on National Signing Day, but Wednesday also marked the start of the NCAA’s signing period for soccer. UE’s men’s program inked six players, all of them all-stars at Aces soccer camps, and two of them NSCAA Scholar All-Americans. Check out coach Mike Jacobs’ 2013 class here.
—And with Signing Day under way, the joke on Twitter today courtesy UE sophomore pitcher Forrest Herrmann: “Signed some big time recruits today.. Things are really looking up for Evansville football.
#NSD. #UndefeatedSince98.” In case you missed it last fall, the Aces’ football program won’t be starting up anytime soon.
—Both UE (13-11, 6-6 Missouri Valley Conference) and Drake (11-12, 5-7 MVC) will enter Sunday’s 7 p.m. tip at the Ford Center off tough losses. The Aces, of course, couldn’t hit a shot late Tuesday at Bradley in another road defeat. The Bulldogs played a disastrous second half Wednesday at Illinois State, falling in a game where they led by as many as 17 points.
—Again, fans are encouraged to wear orange to the Drake game on Sunday (UE is also offering a deal on its apparel). I’ll confirm later this week what color the Aces’ uniforms will be, but I’m guessing they’ll match the stands after using the Oakland City game as a tuneup in them.
—If the last two days proved anything, it’s that no team is invincible in the MVC. A night after lowly Southern Illinois upended Wichita State on Tuesday, Indiana State routed Creighton. Unsurprisingly, both victories came by the home team. View the league standings and Arch Madness seedings if the season ended now.
—Look for more in the coming days on UE’s baseball team, which opens its season a week from Friday with a road series against Arkansas-Little Rock of the Sun Belt Conference. Coach Wes Carroll returns most of his fielders and all key pitchers for his fifth season.
—Also this week, I’ll have an update on Khristian Hart, the UE women’s basketball team’s leading scorer who had her season end early due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Hart has seemed in good spirits if her Twitter account is any indication and also received a get-well letter from a Connecticut player.
