—Either the UE women and Missouri State switched jerseys, or both have developed into much different teams since beginning Missouri Valley Conference play earlier this month. The Aces beat the defending MVC champion Bears handily at the Ford Center on Friday, securing their fourth straight win on “Education Day.”
—Missouri State held UE sophomore Mallory Ladd to her least-productive outing of the season so far with eight points and five rebounds in just 21 minutes. Ladd fouled out of the victory after struggling with whistles in the first half as well. Now a target for opponents’ game plans, the MVC recognized Ladd this week in its Jackie Styles Trophy update.
—The UE women have set themselves up for a game Sunday for first place in the MVC when Wichita State comes to the Ford Center for a 1 p.m. tip. Heading into a Friday night tip at Southern Illinois, a program that recently fired its coach, the Shockers were the only undefeated team in league play at 5-0. UE is 5-1 after its victory over Missouri State.
—In men’s news, UE’s game Saturday at Illinois State will air on Fox Sports Plus in Indiana due to a conflict on Fox Sports Midwest. For information on channel listings locally, click here.
—The Redbirds enter Saturday having won two straight and earning respect from Vegas, which lists Illinois State as a 6.5-point favorite. First-year coach Dan Muller spoke earlier this week about his revived Redbirds club, which opened MVC play with six straight losses before posting back-to-back wins.
—The MVC regularly updates its members’ standings in a number of computer rankings around the country. Combining them all — ESPN, Sagarin, KenPom, etc. — UE’s average stood at 110.5 as of Friday. Illinois State was 105.5.
—By the way, Roberts Stadium is officially no more. As of the morning commute Friday, all that stood were the steel “trusses,” which were scheduled to come down one-by-one today anyway but fell prematurely. 14 News has video of Roberts Stadium crashing down.
