—I wrote a follow-up story from UE’s perspective this week on a report published in the Des Moines Register regarding Missouri Valley Conference coaches’ salaries. The Aces are up against larger programs, namely Creighton, which pays coach Doug McDermott a base salary seven times as much as UE coach Marty Simmons makes.

—A news release sent from Castle High School on Thursday confirmed that senior Blake Simmons, son of Marty Simmons, plans to sign a letter of intent next week.

—The UE women open their season at 6 p.m. Friday against Ball State in Muncie, Ind. Click here for a preview. I’ll stop by to cover it on the way to South Bend for the men’s opener Saturday, so follow on the blog for updates on the women’s game.

—Readers submitted some questions Thursday afternoon in my first UE sports chat. You can go back and view the whole conversation here.

—Former UE coach Jim Crews made a Yahoo! list of top 25 most intriguing coaches this season. Crews, now at Saint Louis, replaced Rick Majerus on an interim basis as Majerus deals with health issues.

—College basketball blog Rush The Court published its MVC season preview Thursday and tabbed the Aces as low as I’ve seen them anywhere: eighth.

—UE received three votes in the first CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, which actually places the Aces 58th on the list compiled weekly during the season by various coaches at small-conference schools.

—Sophomore Sophomore Nick Schroeder’s placement on the all-MVC men’s soccer second team highlighted nine Aces’ appearances on the various all-conference listings, which can be viewed here in full. Drake’s last-minute goal Wednesday ended UE’s season in the first round of the MVC tournament.
