—UE didn’t have a televised practice like Indiana or Big Blue Madness like Kentucky to kick off basketball season. Rather, as coach Marty Simmons said, the Aces got to work on Friday at the Fifth Third Basketball Facility. Read my story about UE’s first day here.
—Speaking of season kickoff events, UE made its official Hoopfest announcement — 6 p.m. Thursday at the Ford Center with $1 hot dogs, popcorn and drinks. The men’s and women’s basketball showcase includes 3-point and dunk contests as well as intra-squad scrimmages.
—I wrote earlier this week news of Denver Holmes joining a Swiss professional club. It turns out former Ace Shy Ely plays in the same league and on the team Holmes opened against on Saturday. I’ll post when a box score is made available.
—The women’s soccer team got goals from freshman Kayla Smith and junior Stephanie Thompson in its 2-0 senior day win over Northern Iowa. The Aces moved to 2-1-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play behind freshman goalkeeper Simone Busby’s third shutout.
—UE’s women cross country team won its home Evansville Invitation on Saturday boosted by junior Kelby Jenkins’ fourth win of the season, a 5K in 17:48.09. Men’s runner John Genet won the 8K race in 25:21.90, and the Aces finished second in team scoring to IPFW. Next up for UE are the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in two weeks.
