—Still working on some leftovers from last week’s media day, I’ll have a story in Monday’s paper about UE’s freshman class and its winning background. All five have played for some significant hardware in the last four years, be it a high school title game or Egidijus Mockevicius in the European Championship.
—UE will host its women’s basketball media day Monday afternoon in the Fifth Third Basketball Facility. Expect to see some notes and photos afterward on the blog.
—Missouri Valley Conference beat writers and sports information directors are submitting their preseason polls and all-conference teams this week. Here’s mine with UE picked third behind Creighton and Northern Iowa.
—I made my first trip to the Ford Center last night to cover the Evansville IceMen opener. The crowd was announced at more than 8,800, although it probably actually came up short of that number. Still, it was a number that topped last year’s IceMen home opener, and I met an IceMen blogger who explored Ford Center attendance recently a little more in depth than I did.
—The men’s soccer team dropped to 1-1 in MVC play with a 2-0 loss at Bradley on Saturday.
—UE’s volleyball team continued its slide, also against the Braves on Saturday, falling 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-21).
—Southern Illinois earned a swimming and diving sweep over UE on Saturday at the Carson Center. The Aces men lost 149-73 while the women were defeated 124-119.
—In its only home (sort of) match during the fall season, the women’s tennis team knocked off Division II University of Charleston on Saturday at USI.
