Plenty of UE home action this past weekend:

–The volleyball team played Friday and Saturday, splitting its MVC home-opening weekend 1-1. The Aces lost to Loyola in straight sets on Friday but came back with renewed confidence and energy on Saturday, downing Bradley, 3-1.

Check out my story from Saturday’s match against the Braves, where dominant third and fourth sets from UE secured its first conference victory of the season.

–The women’s soccer team also won its first MVC game of the season, beating Drake 1-0 on Sunday. The field was wet and the play was slow and sloppy, but a goal by freshman Emily Richardson in the 11th minute was enough to give the Aces the win.

Head coach Krista McKendree said after the game that despite the fact that the game wasn’t the best the team has played, she’s happy with the win. Read my story in today’s paper to hear more of what she had to say after the match.

–It’s basketball season. Finally. The men’s and women’s teams began practice on Sunday, as a new NCAA rule allows teams to begin official practice six weeks before the first game. For men’s head coach Marty Simmons, that means getting the freshmen acclimated to more rigorous practices and establishing some team leaders in the absence of Colt Ryan. Read what more Simmons had to say in my story from yesterday’s practice.

–Men’s golf resumes its fall tournament slate today at the Cleveland State Men’s Golf Invitational. The Aces will shoot 36 holes today and wrap up the tournament with 18 holes on Tuesday.
